Creating Prom Queens with Project Prom

Posted by Melissa Mott on

It was one of the best nights of my lifeI spent all day getting my hair done, my makeup done, and taking pictures with my friends. I stayed out all night dancing to all of my favorite songs, and I felt more beautiful than I ever had before. It was one of the best days of my life; but it all started with just a dress.

As a girl, you know exactly how hard it was to find the perfect dress for your prom. You probably dragged your mom or dad around to a dozen stores and tried on hundreds of dresses before you found the right one.

Now imagine doing that without enough money.

Whereas boys can get away with spending about $60 on a tuxedo rental, girls are stuck spending upwards of $300-$500 for a simple dress. Out here in south Jersey, this is especially hard for some girls. Remember all of those people I told you about during the Community Food Drive who couldn't afford to feed their families? Well, now their kids are at the age where they should be attending prom. However, most of them don't because they can't afford to buy a dress.

We couldn't fathom the thought of having some girls sit home while many of their classmates went off to their prom, so we've been working together with a large number of incredibly enthusiastic volunteers (thanks, Rene) along with the Boys and Girls Club of Atlantic City. Together, we collected over 500 gorgeous brand new or "like new" prom dresses.

From Saturday the 12th through Monday the 14th, any girl who has a current high school ID can come by and take home a dress. Each girl will be able to pick 3 dresses to try on and will take the one they like most home. Besides dresses, we've also collected a handful of jewelry, shoes, and purses. Some of the volunteers even put together a few raffles where the girls can win gift cards for manicures before their prom!

If you know of anyone who may want to come to our event and leave with their very own prom dress, make sure to share the details with them!

Saturday 12th: 10am-4pm

Sunday 13th: 10am-4pm

Monday 14th: 3pm-7pm

Location: Kensington Furniture, 200 Tilton Road, Northfield, NJ

We can't let anyone sit home this year. Together, we've already collected so many dresses and accessories, but now we need to make sure that every single piece goes off to a girl who will have a night to remember like I had. Let's make it the best day of her life.
