5 Styling Tips for Your Small Living Room

Posted by Melissa Mott on

I want nothing more than to live in that big, beautiful dream house, but unfortunately I'm not so lucky to be living there just quite yet. In fact, my apartment has such a small living room that I had absolutely no idea how to decorate it when I first moved in. I ended up wasting away hours of my time doing research and buying and returning countless pieces before I got it right. I know I'm not the only one who has big dreams for a small living room, either, so here are my tips on how to decorate your small space:

1. Have Pieces with More than one Purpose

The first thing I learned is that easiest way to make it look like you actually have more space is by not using as much! So get a storage ottoman that doubles as a coffee table. Now you have a way to keep your small area clean, an extra place to sit, and a place to kick your feet up on while you’re watching TV.

2. Opt for a Sectional

It may not seem like it, but a sectional typically takes up less space than a sofa and loveseat. Having a sofa and loveseat can also make a small living room feel pretty cramped if they’re placed too close together. A sectional can fit in tight corners and are made to be placed close together! This will free up a lot more room than you think.

3. A Coffee Table Isn’t Required

Just because all of your friends have coffee tables in their living rooms doesn’t mean it’s a necessity. I thought this idea was strange at first, too, until I asked myself what I'd really use a coffee table for anyway. If your room is too small and you can't think of a good reason for needing one, don’t use a coffee table! At the end of the day, I've found that investing in a single end table has been much more practical.

4. Use a Neutral Palette

Having a neutral palette can help to make a room look and feel more open. Painting your walls a light color while incorporating a light, yet contrasting, sofa will keep your living room easy on the eyes. The eggshell walls and powder blue sectional in my apartment look amazing together!

5. Don’t Use a Sofa At All!

If your small living room really is too tiny, use two or three arm chairs instead of an entire couch. If you really want to make full use of your space, combine #5 with #1 and use a small storage ottoman as a coffee table and another seat!

Got a small living room? I'd love to hear how you decorated your small space! Let me know what you did in the comments.
