Three Important Facts about Sleep Health

There's nothing quite like a good night's sleep to help you feel good and have a boost of energy for the day. But many studies have shown that a good night's sleep goes beyond just boosting your mood and energy. Here are three important facts about sleep health:

Good Sleep can Prevent Several Health Risks

Countless studies have shown a link between poor sleep health and some serious health problems such as diabetes, obesity, heart disease and heart attacks. Good sleep doesn't make you immune from health risks, but it is an important part of an overall healthy lifestyle. The health effects of sleep loss may take years to become serious, but a study (linked above) conducted by Harvard University found that pre-diabetes was evident in study participants after just four days of sleep deprivation.

Good Sleep can Improve Memory and Learning

Your brain remains very active while you snooze. One part of its activity is building memories through a process called consolidation. A full night sleep ensures that your brain has enough time to create those memories. Learning new skills and knowledge becomes much easier if your brain has a chance to build up those memories.

Good Sleep can Lower Your Risk of Injury

A study published in the Journal of Pediatric Orthopedics found that sleep deprivation lead to an increased risk of injury for high school athletes. The NHTSA calls drowsy driving "a form of impaired driving" that caused an estimated 846 fatalities in 2014. A good night sleep is an important part of staying safe.
